Playing Loud Music on Trains Could Cost Passengers ₹1,000, Southern Railway Warns
Southern Railway has warned passengers against playing loud music or videos on trains without earphones. Violations could attract fines of up to ₹1,000 or removal from railway premises, while reports mention stricter penalties for repeat offences.
Many passengers watch videos, scroll through reels or listen to songs on their phones to pass the time during a journey. However, when they use their phone speakers at high volume instead of wearing earphones, the noise can make the journey uncomfortable for others. The problem becomes particularly disruptive at night, when passengers want to rest or sleep.
To address the issue, Southern Railway has issued instructions to its divisions to prevent unnecessary noise on trains and at railway stations. According to the railway, passengers who disturb others by playing loud music or videos on their mobile phones, speaking loudly or creating disturbances in public places may face action under the applicable rules.
Loud Music Could Attract a Fine of Up to ₹1,000
The railway has indicated that passengers found disturbing others through excessive noise could be fined up to ₹1,000. Depending on the circumstances, the authorities may also remove the passenger concerned from a train or railway premises under the relevant provisions.
However, the action taken will depend on the nature of the incident and the specific legal provision applicable to the case. The warning is aimed at addressing behaviour that affects other passengers' comfort and makes it difficult for them to travel peacefully.
Repeated Violations Could Lead to Stricter Action
Southern Railway has also warned that passengers who ignore officials' instructions could face more stringent action for violating the rules.
Some reports have referred to penalties of up to ₹5,000 and imprisonment of up to six months for repeated violations. However, the applicability of these punishments needs to be verified against the relevant provision of railway law and the official order.
The railway's warning highlights the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment in trains and railway stations. Passengers who use mobile phones for entertainment are expected to avoid disturbing others, particularly during hours when fellow travellers may be resting. The precise consequences of a violation will depend on the circumstances and the legal provisions applicable to the offence.
